Auriculotherapy, Auricular acupuncture

Auricular acupuncture (ear points) is fascinating because the ear acts as a kind of microsystem, reflecting the whole body in miniature.

Traditional Chinese Medicine provides a wonderful framework for this, looking at patterns of imbalance rather than isolated problems. For example, two people might both come in with headaches, but the underlying causes can be very different, stress, digestive issues, or energy blockages.

That’s why we always take time to understand the bigger picture, so the treatment feels tailored and meaningful.

The ear is a small path to the vast landscape within

By selecting specific points on the ear and at the same time considering the person’s physical health, stress levels, emotions, and overall energy, treatment can reach much deeper than addressing symptoms alone.

Modern research has found that stimulation of auricular points can activate the vagus nerve, one of the key nerves involved in calming the body and regulating inflammation.

Functional MRI studies have shown neural activation in the somatosensory cortex, limbic areas, and brainstem regions following ear point stimulation, supporting the theory that auriculotherapy is more than a placebo.

This aligns with clinical observations and growing research showing that auriculotherapy may help reduce or regulate a wide range of conditions by influencing the nervous system and restoring balance.

The smallest key can open the greatest gate

How Auriculotherapy Can Help For;

Sympathetic overdrive (stress response)

Auricular acupuncture has been shown to calm the autonomic nervous system.

This can help lower heart rate, ease tension, and support recovery from chronic stress or trauma.

Inflammation

Stimulating certain ear points may modulate inflammatory pathways, which is why auriculotherapy is sometimes used alongside treatment for arthritis, digestive disorders,

or post-surgical recovery.

Chronic pain

Because the ear microsystem connects to the brain’s pain-regulating centers, auricular points can be effective for musculoskeletal pain, migraines, and even neuropathic pain.

Many patients report pain relief that feels both immediate and lasting.

Anxiety and sleep disorders

By influencing the vagus nerve and parasympathetic activity, ear acupuncture can promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

It is increasingly being explored as a complementary therapy for anxiety, insomnia, and even PTSD.

Addictions and cravings

Ear points are often used in protocols to help reduce cravings for nicotine, alcohol, or other substances, supporting detoxification and emotional stability during recovery.

Digestive and hormonal balance

Because the ear reflects the whole body, points can also be used to support digestion, regulate appetite, and address menstrual or menopausal symptoms.

Taken together, these effects show how auriculotherapy could act as a bridge between physical and emotional health. It doesn’t just treat symptoms in isolation but encourages the body’s natural ability to self-regulate and heal.

My Approach

In my experience, combining ear points with an understanding of each person’s unique constitution, emotional well-being, and physical symptoms makes treatment not only more effective but also more personal and supportive.

Drawing on the depth of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I see each session as a way to help restore balance, strengthen resilience, and create space for healing on many levels.

As a practitioner trained in biology, with an understanding of hormonal pathways and nervous system regulation, I try to bring a scientific lens to each treatment.

I see each session as more than a treatment, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with oneself, to bring the body back into balance, and to create space for healing and growth.

Inspired by the teachings of Dr. Nadia Volf, who has extensively researched auriculotherapy, I try to integrate these insights with my own clinical experience to support patients with a wide range of needs, from pain management and immune system support to emotional and mental well-being, and even help with addiction.

Using auriculotherapy, I’ve supported patients with;

Nervous System Conditions

Multiple sclerosis (MS) / helping with muscle tone, spasticity, and fatigue

Insomnia / improving sleep depth and regulation

Migraines and chronic pain / reducing severity and frequency

General Health and Regulation

Addiction support / especially alcohol, nicotine, and sugar

Weight balance / reducing cravings, improving digestion, and emotional regulation

Stress and emotional resilience / calming the nervous system and re-centering the body

Many of my patients have reported not only symptomatic relief, but a renewed sense of inner balance and energy.
